My reason for reading this item was to see if there was any real evidence to support the idea that Michael Stone was framed. The case is recognised as being a clear miscarriage of justice but there has been no suggestion that there has been a conspiracy to frame Stone for this murder to date.
Apart from the title, there are no outright accusations against persons or agencies, that may have been complicit in the implied conspiracy to frame Stone, and no indication as to what the motive might have been to do so. The author alludes to the possibility of it being good cause corruption but never points the finger of suspicion at anybody specifically and provides no evidence at all to support the statement that Stone was framed.
One of the most interesting parts is the incorporation of the Milly Dowler murder into the story in order to illustrate the difficulty facing the police when time lapses. A perfectly valid point but one cannot help but be struck by the fact that Milly Dowler's now convicted murderer is also standing in line to take the rap for the Chillenden murders when Stone finally gets released. Now if you can understand why Michael Stone had a problem recalling his whereabouts after a year, a factor that weighed against him at trial, can you imagine the problem that faces Levi Bellfield.
It would certainly appear to be the case that there is very little real effort to get justice for Michael Stone. He is still suffering from the deliberate character assassination that was such a major part of the work done by the prosecution, the media and the medics. Very few really care about his innocence because as Charles Earl says, if he didn't do this job it might have been another so its just as well that he stays banged up. The more likely committer of the crime is also banged up for life and so the public are doubly safe. There should be no room for this kind of rationale in any system of justice which is the most important point to take from the Michael Stone case. I am not saying that it should be just black or white but I am saying that there is no room for swings and roundabouts.
